Bacitracin zinc is a single-ingredient first aid antibiotic, dosed at 500 units per gram. It is active mainly against the gram-positive bacteria, such as staph and strep, that most often cause minor wound infections.
It is a common choice for people who have reacted to neomycin, one of the ingredients in triple antibiotic ointments.
Like other first aid antibiotics, it is labeled to help prevent infection in minor cuts, scrapes, and burns, and comes in a petrolatum base that keeps the wound surface from drying out.
Bleeding that will not stop, deep or puncture wounds, animal bites, signs of infection (spreading redness, warmth, pus, fever), or a wound that is not healing after a week.
