About Hydrocortisone 1%

Hydrocortisone is a mild corticosteroid. At the 1% strength sold over the counter, it reduces the inflammation that makes skin red, swollen, and itchy — the same active ingredient as Cortizone•10®.

The Medi-First® label covers the temporary relief of itching associated with minor skin irritations, inflammation, and rashes due to eczema, psoriasis, poison ivy, poison oak, poison sumac, insect bites, detergents, jewelry, seborrheic dermatitis, and soaps, as well as external genital, feminine, and anal itching.

Because it works on inflammation rather than numbing the skin, it is the usual pick when a rash looks angry, not just itchy.

Using it well

  • Apply to the affected area not more than 3 to 4 times daily, as the label directs.
  • OTC labels limit use to 7 days unless a doctor says otherwise. If a rash is not better in a week, or clears and comes back, see a doctor.
  • Do not use on a rash you suspect is fungal (athlete's foot, ringworm); steroids can make those worse. Do not use in the eyes.

See a doctor for

Swelling of the face or throat, hives spreading across the body, a rash with fever, blisters, or pus, or no improvement after 7 days.
