About the active ingredients
Triple antibiotic ointment combines three antibiotics — bacitracin zinc, neomycin sulfate, and polymyxin B sulfate — in a petrolatum base. Each one works against a different range of bacteria, which is why the combination is a long-standing first aid staple. It is the same trio of active ingredients found in Neosporin®.
Over-the-counter first aid antibiotics in this category are labeled as first aid to help prevent infection in minor cuts, scrapes, and burns. They are not for deep or puncture wounds, animal bites, or serious burns, which need a doctor.
The petrolatum base also keeps the surface of a wound from drying out, which many people find more comfortable while a scrape heals.
Using it well
- Clean the area first. Rinse under running water, pat dry, then apply a fingertip-sized amount 1 to 3 times daily, as the label directs. A bandage can go over it.
- Some people develop a red, itchy rash from neomycin. If that happens, stop use and consider a single-ingredient bacitracin zinc ointment instead.
- Do not use in the eyes or over large areas of the body.
See a doctor for
Bleeding that will not stop, deep or gaping wounds, animal bites, puncture wounds, spreading redness or pus, or no improvement within a week.

FAQ
- Is this the same as Neosporin?
- It contains the same three active ingredients as Neosporin (bacitracin zinc, neomycin sulfate, polymyxin B sulfate). It is not made or distributed by Neosporin's trademark owner.
- Can I use it on children?
- The Drug Facts label does not set a minimum age. Clean the affected area, apply a small amount (about the size of a fingertip) 1 to 3 times daily, and cover with a sterile bandage if you like. Ask a doctor before use on animal bites, serious burns, or deep or puncture wounds, and do not use longer than 1 week unless directed by a doctor.
