About the active ingredients

This extra strength anti-itch cream pairs diphenhydramine HCl 2% — the same antihistamine found in oral Benadryl®, used here as a topical analgesic — with zinc acetate 0.1%, a skin protectant that helps dry the oozing and weeping of poison ivy, oak, and sumac. It compares to the active ingredients in Extra Strength Benadryl® Cream.

Products in this category are labeled for the temporary relief of pain and itching associated with insect bites, minor burns, sunburn, minor skin irritations, minor cuts and scrapes, and rashes due to poison ivy, oak, and sumac. The word pain matters: this is the one to reach for when a bite or sting hurts as well as itches.

Diphenhydramine works on the skin's surface nerves rather than on inflammation, so it feels different from hydrocortisone and suits different situations.

Using it well

  • Apply not more than 3 to 4 times daily, as the label directs.
  • Do not use on large areas of the body, on chickenpox or measles, or together with any other diphenhydramine product (including oral) unless a doctor tells you to.
  • Stop use and ask a doctor if the condition worsens or symptoms last more than 7 days.

See a doctor for

Trouble breathing or swelling of the face, lips, or tongue after a bite or sting (emergency), widespread hives, or a rash with fever or pus.

FAQ
How is this different from hydrocortisone?
It combines diphenhydramine HCl (a topical analgesic/antihistamine) with zinc acetate (skin protectant) for itching AND pain from bites and poison ivy.
