About Miconazole Nitrate 2%

Miconazole nitrate 2% is an azole antifungal and the active ingredient in Micatin®. Like clotrimazole it interferes with the fungal cell membrane, but it is used at a 2% concentration.

The Medi-First® label describes it as proven clinically effective in the treatment of most athlete's foot, jock itch, and ringworm, and for effective relief of the itching, scaling, burning, and discomfort that accompany them.

Like other azoles it is applied twice daily, and the label's treatment periods — 4 weeks for athlete's foot and ringworm, 2 weeks for jock itch — should be completed even after symptoms fade.

Using it well

  • Apply twice daily to clean, dry skin as the label directs — typically 4 weeks for athlete's foot and ringworm, 2 weeks for jock itch. Fungi are still present after the itching stops; finish the course.
  • Keep feet dry: moisture-wicking socks, alternating shoes, and sandals in locker rooms make treatment more effective.
  • Not for use on the scalp or nails.

See a doctor for

No improvement after the labeled treatment period, scalp or nail infection, cracked or bleeding skin, or a recurring rash.
